ADVANCED CROWD SAFETY MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP (2 DAYS)

OVERVIEW

Understand the movement and behaviours of crowds through six phases of events. This session will identify best practices in Crowd Safety Management using our experience gained working across the globe at the world's largest events.

OBJECTIVES

    • Understanding the basics of Crowd Psychology.
    • Discuss density vs. capacity and why they are not the same.
    • Identify critical stages of events and model using crowd science theory.
    • Examine and understand queuing theory and how tactics may change depending on the event.
    • Understanding Ingress Flow Rates.
    • Identify best practice Front of Stage Barrier design for differing types of events.
    • Understand how to review new event sites and assess for suitability.
    • Identify effective show pause, show stop and show restart procedures.

ENTERTAINMENT ELECTRICS - POWER DISTRIBUTION AND ELECTRICAL SAFETY (2 DAYS)

OVERVIEW

Power distribution and electrical safety for entertainment electricians - Two days of fun and learning covering most of the topics listed in the content outline of the ETCP Entertainment Electrician Certification exam not including control systems. Little experience? Come on in! Lots of experience? You'll love the class. It starts with basic electricity, circuit laws, and theory, and builds towards more advanced topics including power distribution, power factor, and harmonics, with an emphasis on electrical safety, the use of PPE, codes and regulations, grounding and bonding, and GFCIs.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

    • Develop and sharpen skills related to properly designing portable power distribution systems
    • Recognize and mitigate the hazards involved in distributing electrical power
    • Using the right techniques, tools, and PPE for specific tasks.

Upon completing the Entertainment Electrics workshop, attendees will earn 8 hours of credit towards their Live Performance Electrical Certification (LPEC) offered through Actsafe. CLICK HERE for more information.

Richard Cadena
Academy of Production Technology

Richard Cadena is an ETCP Certified Entertainment Electrician and an ETCP Recognized Trainer with 35 years of experience in the entertainment lighting industry. He is the author of: “Electricity for Entertainment Electricians & Technicians, 3rd Edition”; “Automated Lighting: The Art and Science of Moving Light, 3rd Edition”; “Lighting Design for Modern Houses of Worship”; “Focus on Lighting Technology”

He is a columnist for Lighting & Sound America, Lighting & Sound International, and Protocol magazines. As a freelance lighting designer and lighting consultant he has worked on
concert tours, television, theatre, motion picture productions, and he has designed dozens of lighting systems for permanent installations. He is a member of IATSE Local 205 in good standing. Current and former clients include Cirque du Soleil, Carnival Cruise Lines, SeaWorld, Saturday Night Live, NBA, IATSE Locals 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 16, 58, 479, and more.

SPECIAL EFFECTS PYROTECHNICS WORKSHOP (1 DAY)

OVERVIEW

Pyrotechnic special effects, also known as theatrical effects or proximate pyrotechnics are devices that are typically used by licensed pyrotechnicians in the entertainment industry and that may be similar in nature to consumer fireworks in terms of their chemical composition. After taking this course, you will be able to submit the documents to become a Special Effects Pyrotechnician.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After this session, you will understand the basics of Special Effects Pyrotechnics - how the products function, how to set up and function them, how to keep performers and spectators safe. Should you wish, you will be able to submit your test results to the Explosives Regulatory Division of Natural Resources Canada to apply for your license.

FOUNDATIONS OF PROTECTIVE SPACES WORKSHOP (1/2 DAY)

OVERVIEW

You may have heard the term “safer spaces” in relation to performing arts and live events, but what are ‘Protective” Spaces? Protective Spaces are physical establishments, but also teams within these industries that recognize that safety requires ongoing action and risk assessment. Spaces that work to protect the people inside them - patrons, artists, and staff - don’t happen by accident! Stacey Forrester from Good Night Out Vancouver will be hosting this session which will cover the basics of Protective Spaces for those in the industry, including practices for production managers, venues, artist managers and patrons. Join her for this interactive session and leave with tools you can use to create safe music experiences right away!

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

    • Understand current terminology in discussing sexual violence.
    • Identify risk factors for sexual harassment and misconduct in the performing arts and live events sectors.
    • Explore tools and strategies to reduce risk and respond to sexual violence at events.

Stacey Forrester
Good Night Out Vancouver

Stacey Forrester is the education director of Good Night Out Vancouver. Stacey is a former downtown east side community health nurse and current violence prevention educator with Good Night Out Vancouver, a BC- Based non-profit society that works directly with the hospitality, live events and arts sectors to prevent and respond to create safer experiences for those working in those industries as well as patrons.

For the last 10 years Stacey has directed the Harm Reduction program for multiple Music Festivals in BC, including Bass Coast Electronic Music and Art Festival. Her work here includes training over 100 volunteers every year, running a 24 hour education and sanctuary space, and implementing drug testing services, including the use of (FTIR) technology.

SYSTEM SCAFFOLD COMPETENT PERSON WORKSHOP (1 DAY)

OVERVIEW

This course is offered to train and certify event workers to construct scaffolds, as recommended in THIS ARTICLE. Scaffolding certification needed in Canada, says father of Radiohead drum tech (November 28, 2022, Canadian Occupational Safety). Each student will learn how to become a competent person when building scaffolding. The training is suitable for anyone working on scaffolds, those who supervise work on and near scaffolds, and those who supervise the erecting, altering, and dismantling of scaffolds.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

A system scaffolding structure is essentially a frame structure using a specialized modular connection and has evolved from the general principles of tube and clamp scaffolding.

This one day workshop will include a brief review of scaffold fundamentals and then will focus primarily on discussing local regulations, hazards, and how to build system scaffold structures safely and securely. Students will also participate in a practical session where they will work together to erect a small system utility scaffold.

This course complies with CSA Z-797 “Code of Practice for Access Scaffolds”.

Certification: Participation in the practical component and passing a final exam (70% or higher) is required to qualify for the 3-year Scaffolding & Access Industry Association (SAIA) Competent Person certification. A certificate of completion and wallet card from the SAIA Training Program will be provided.

Jaysen Palangio
Canada Scaffold Supply Co. Ltd.

Jaysen Palangio has accumulated 40 years of knowledge and experience in the construction industry. He began his career as a young scaffold apprentice and eventually became a certified Journeyman scaffolder. Working at Canada Scaffold Supply Co. Ltd for the last 28 years, Jaysen has also acquired a strong background in Health and Safety. Jaysen is always looking forward to teaching and recently quoted, “I want to be able to share my 40 + years of knowledge and experience within a classroom environment. My goal is to provide every student with a better understanding on how to recognize, build and dismantle a safer scaffolding.” Jaysen is always looking forward to meeting and teaching new students in 2024.
